 "A TIME AND A SEASON"

"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:  A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.” - Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

The year 1968 was a time of great turmoil and conflict in our nation.  It was the year that both Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated.  Those 45 years old or older,  probably remember what you were doing when you heard the news.

Not as well known in the American psyche, but just as important was an incident known as the "Orangeburg Massacre". Three young Black men, Samuel Hammond, Delano Middleton, and Henry Smith were shot and killed by the police while protesting the segregation policy at a local bowling alley on February 8, 1968 in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Forty years later in 2008, we now see that the “Change” these three young men fought for has come to pass.  Their ultimate sacrifice and their fight for the Civil Rights for all Americans continues to grow and prosper.

When Senator Obama and Senator Clinton come to South Carolina on January 26, forty years later, the line from that “terrible day” in our nation’s history will come full circle.  Both of them are beneficiaries of the sacrifices of these young men.

For Black America, seeing Senator Obama and his family standing victorious on that stage in Iowa was a sight I thought I would never see in my lifetime.  For that moment, to see a Black Man as President, and a Black Woman as the First Lady marks the beginning of a new era in our country’s Political Reality.

I don’t know if the brother can win this, but I'll tell you one thing . . . the fact that no one can say he can not . . .  CHANGES EVERYTHING!
