"Secrets, Lies, and Morality"
Washington, DC (PoliticalJones.com) - Looks like the morality police in the GOP are on the run again. The recent arrest and admission of guilt of disorderly conduct charges has embroiled U.S. Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) and the GOP on issues they would prefer never to talk about. Whether he is gay or not is between him and his God. Most folks could care less about his sexual orientation.
Let’s face the facts; even people in position of power have secrets they want to hide. The GOP and their efforts to position themselves as the Family Values Party and the mantle of moral superiority can now be viewed as insincere by its conservative base. With the actions of Sen. Craig and others, they have opened themselves up to be referred to as the GOHP, “Grand Old Hypocrite Party”.
Most folks don’t care about the private lives of their political leaders. What they care about is how these leaders are going to handle the hard issues confronting the country right now. How are they going to handle the War in Iraq and the continuing rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast region? How will they handle the rise in residential home foreclosures, and the lack of affordable health care for million folks in our country?
When our political leadership claims to have moral superiority, and then fail to live up to those claims, in our cynical world, we are not surprised. What most folks want from their political leaders are straightforward answers and solutions to their problems. No one has the time to worry about the soap-opera lives of those they elect.
It is clear in 2007, and will be even more clear in 2008 that problems facing our country are much too important to be ignored. Empty rhetoric about who has moral superiority means nothing to everyday working folks.
Right now, it is put up or shut up time for all political leaders.
